Munich in the Rain

We met some friends from Texas in Munich this weekend.  They were doing a big European vacation, and we met up with them for the Munich portion of their trip.

Jason and I had been to Munich before for Oktoberfest, but it was completely different this time.  It was fun to spend some more time walking around and seeing the buildings - something we didn't really have time for when we came before.  It rained most of our second day there, which was a bummer, but we made the best of it.

One thing that was a little annoying, however, was how inflated the prices were because its such a touristy town.  The food and drink especially were pricey.  I like the Wiesbaden prices much better and I'm glad to be back, even if its still just to our hotel room.

Also, I think we'll try to take a train next time.  We decided to drive to avoid some up front costs of getting a train pass, but what was supposed to be a 3-4 hour drive turned into a 5-6 hour drive both ways!  That's a little long for just a casual weekend trip, in my opinion.

We were going to do Neuschwanstein, but we decided to save it for another day.  It was raining on and off, and we decided that we just wanted to get back.  I think it might be cooler in the Fall when the leaves are changing anyways, and maybe we'll be able to go on a weekday so its not as busy.

A view of the Rathaus (town hall) in the Marionplatz (square in the city center). Very cool building. Three times a day, figurines circle to music in the green section on the center tower - like a cuckoo clock.

Chinese Pagoda in the Englischer Gartens. The gardens are huge, and you come to this after a 5 minute stroll into the center of the park. There's a building to the right that serves beer and traditional German food, and you just find a picnic table and hang out. It was a nice experience with perfect weather.

An exotic fruit stand near the Marionplatz. My brother would have loved this because they had dragon fruit (bright pink in the center).

Not only are dogs welcome in restaurants here, but the waitresses at the Augustiner Brau were fawning all over this dog - giving it kitchen scraps, making him sit and shake, etc. Kind of funny.

A cute little back garden gate I saw when running this week. It opens up (behind me) to a turnip field on a hill that overlooks the city.
This week has been a little less eventful than last week, but that's ok.  Jason has been working nights temporarily, so our schedules are completely off which has made hanging out together a little challenging.  Its also been very hot, so my solo excursions have been limited as well.

I've been running and working on German to keep busy.  We're heading to Munich tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to that!  We'll stop in Stuttgart on the way there and then hit Neuschwanstein Castle on the way back.

Here are couple iphone shots from the week.

Another particularly lush section of my run. Much different than my runs in Kuwait!

This is Tiger Spice chai tea mix. They have torn the orange label off a can and applied it to another can, that's why it looks weird, but this is quite possibly the best Chai mix I've ever had. I actually discovered it at World Market in the U.S. first, so when I saw it at a stand at the farmers market this morning, I had to take a picture. If you see this stuff, buy it. You won't regret it.

Another farmer's market find. I can't remember the names of these flowers, but they were just so perfect!

A quick snapshot of the farmers market this morning. Not as busy as the Saturday one, but I almost prefer that.

Walluf Wine Festival

Wiesbaden is located in the Rheingau wine region, most famous for their Riesling wines.  The season for wine festivals, I believe, is beginning.  There were several this weekend and the Wiesbaden wine festival is next week.

We went to one in Walluf on Saturday night.  It was in a quaint little town along the Rhine River.  We tried several different types of Riesling and are slowly learning the German terms for wine descriptions, such as dry, fruity, and the different levels of quality.  Its fairly confusing, as you can tell from the picture of the menu below, but we're getting better and bolder with our German.  It was a good night and I'm looking forward to the Wiesbaden festival.

Getting Lost

I've have now gotten lost in Wiesbaden twice and I'm not even driving yet!  The first time, was when a quick run turned into a 45 minute run because I lost my way and the second was yesterday when I walked downtown.  I always have my bearings - I know generally which direction I need to go, but this gives me a false sense of security I guess because it has failed me twice.

I've also been forced to quit data on my cell phone cold turkey, as we get here and figure out what's what we just bought a prepaid sim card without data.  I'm trying to evaluate all the times I think about using data and consider whether it is necessary or not, but I will tell you when I was hiking myself up a steep hill in 90+ degree weather yesterday with no assurance that it was the correct hill, I was REALLY wishing I could pull up a map!  So we'll see how long this technology deprivation truly lasts.

The good news is that there were pretty houses on top of this hill - even though it turned out to be the wrong hill :)

The produce & egg in our new local grocery - it was perfectly cute and quaint on first glance. The non-refrigerated eggs freak me out though.

In the Wee-Small-Hours

I have been on Etsy & Pintrest browsing overload.  There's not a lot on TV here and so when I'm in the hotel room, my options of what to do are limited.  We're going to be here for 2 more weeks, so I don't expect to slow down anytime soon.  I thought I'd share some of the fruits from my labor though.

Enjoy!
